Ayyappa devotes are to follow certain strict customs for 41 days before they set visit the temple at Sabarimala. They nee to be take only purely vegetarian food during these days. Devotees should strictly avoid sexual desires. Sabarimale temple pilgrimage is mostly undertaken by male pilgrims; even though a small number females do visit the temple. (Sabarimala temple entry is restricted to females in fertile age group.) Devotees are expected to wear black, blue or saffron dresses during this period. “Makaravilakku” is the main festival of Sabrimala Ayyappa Temple, which is held during the mid January (normally on 14th of January). Millions of devotees throng to the temple for seeing the “Makara Jyothi” during this day. Watching “Makaravilakku”, light or flame on Ponnambalamedu hill, is also the specialty of the temple festival.
How to go to Sabarimala Temple?
Chenganoor railway station si the nearest station to Sabarimala temple. Kottayam railway station also serves as a link to Sabarimala temple. (Both Chenganoor and Kottayam railway stations are on the Thiruvananthapuram – Ernakulam railway line; via Kottayam. There is another railway line on Thiruvananthapuram – Ernakulam route; via Allapuza, the Venice of the East.
Pathanamthiita and Erumeli towns are close by towns. Cochin International airport or Thiruvanthapuram International airports are at around 110 and 140 kilo meters distance respectively.
